The Hallways are a Bitch!

In Life Lessons, the book Elisabeth Kübler-Ross co-authored with David Kessler, Elisabeth wrote: ‘Change is saying goodbye to an old, familiar situation and facing a new unfamiliar situation. Sometimes it’s not the old or the new that unnerves us, it’s the time in between. Ronnie Kaye, author of Spinning Straw into Gold and two time breast cancer survivor says “ In life when one door closes another always opens, but the hallways are a bitch.” That is how change works, it usually begins with a door closing, an ending, a completion, a loss, a death. Then we enter an uncomfortable period, mourning this completion and living in uncertainty of what is next. This period of uncertainty is hard. But just when we feel we can’t take it anymore, something new emerges: a reintegration, a reinvestment, a new beginning. A door opens. If you fight change, you will be fighting your whole life. That’s why we need to find a way to embrace change, or at least to accept it.’

Right now there are so many people in my life who are dealing with change or uncertainty.  Holding the space for others to be in the moment when life is hard can be so emotional.  We want to do what we can to help, to make things better for our loved ones and we need to remember that in the time of challenge is also the opportunity for wisdom.

For me it comes back to choices.  This past week in the Teacher Training Program we talked about choices as we explored Caroline Myss’ Anatomy of the Spirit book and the second Chakra.  Caroline wrote: ‘Managing the power of choices, with all its creative and spiritual implications, is the essence of the human experience.  All spiritual teachings are directed toward inspiring us to recognize that the power to make choices is the dynamic that converts our spirits into matter, our words into flesh.  The fact that our choices weave our spirits into events is the reason the major spiritual traditions are formed around one essential lesson:  Make your choices wisely, because each choice you make is a creative act of spiritual power for which you are held responsible.  Further, any choice made from faith has the full power of heaven (the universe) behind it – which is why “faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain”.  And any choice made from fear is a violation of the energy of faith.’


So… living life, making choices…. not always easy…. and when done with awareness, intention, attention and positive energy – we know we are doing the best we can in THIS moment!  And while we are in the hallways of life, we can have faith that we will learn what we need to from the given challenge and we can know that we are strong and have the ability to get through it and that will bring us to the light!

Wayne Dyer wrote in his book (I’m all about sharing all these fabulous books today :-)) Wishes Fulfilled that there are 5 steps towards manifesting what we want and when we are doing what we need to get out of the hallway, we might include these steps:

1.  Imagination – imagine anything is possible – the world is abundant with so many options!

2.  Feel it/Believe it – whatever it is that you are imagining, it needs to resonate with you in body, mind and spirit

3.  Act as if it’s true – live from the end in mind… it may not be true right now and you act as if it is

4.  Give it attention – anything that we want to manifest we need to give attention

5.  5 minutes before you go to sleep – think positive thoughts – these are the thoughts that will be in your subconscious mind as you sleep.  You may want to include an I AM statement.

Let me provide an example: I want to write a book, a best seller.

1.  I imagine it is something I can do.  I visualize myself writing and smiling and handing the book over to others.

2.  It resonates with me that I can do this and I believe it.  I feel happy and energized when I think about it.

3.  I can do a variety of visualizations to contribute to acting as if this is true.

4.  I am giving it attention by attending Writing Workshops, by dedicating time to writing and by planning various aspects of what it will take to accomplish this.

5.  Right before I go to sleep I think about it and I include an I AM statement:  I am a bestselling author who writes books that contribute to people living life on purpose and that feeds their soul.

And lest I forget… when you are in the hallways…. breathe.  Changing the breath from a regular pattern (or erratic due to stress/anxiety) to an intentional deep breathing pattern will calm the nervous system.  Here’s a website that describes various breathing techniques:

Gifts & Talents

You know those times when within a few days you see or hear the same words over and over and you wonder: why are these words coming into my life so much at this time? I’m sure you can tell by the photo to the left, the words that have come across my eyes and ears multiple times this week are – gifts & talents.

I’ve been listening to Intuitive Listening, with Christiane Northrup & Mona Lisa Schultz, on a couple of my hour long drives to the Seacoast this past week. And when I returned home in the evenings I listened to the The Daily Love Extravaganza, where Mastin Kipp, founder of The Daily Love, has been interviewing 4-5 amazingly inspirational people each night. These movers and shakers are discussing awakening to our authentic power and creating whatever we want in our lives using, you guessed it, our gifts and talents.

How do we define gifts and talents?  I was talking about this with a friend today and here’s what we came up with. Talents are something we are naturally good at and can excel at with education, focus, and attention. Gifts are when we share our talents with purpose and passion. The website states, “Your gifts and talents are natural abilities which come easily to you and produce extraordinary results.”

When we are living with intention and sharing our gifts and talents, life is at ease, We are grounded. We are happy and peaceful, and our work does not feel like work. It’s pretty simple and very powerful at the same time. It’s simple in that when we are living by serving others and doing what we do well, life flows with ease.  And it’s powerful because of the energy created when we are living in alignment with our authentic self.

The Living Life, Making Choices e-course, which begins in March (a recent change from our initial January start date), is intended to help you get closer to identifying your life’s purpose. The program will begin by assisting you with examining your core values and beliefs, which drive your decision-making process – your choices. Then I’ll take you through exercises to examine different aspects of your life: relationships, health, finances, career, spiritual path, and more. This examination will help you understand yourself in a way that has meaning. It will help you understand why you live your life the way you do and why you make the choices you do. When you begin to live with this awareness and understanding, it can be informative and transformative. You’ll become aware of your gifts & talents which will help you live with passion & purpose – discovering what feeds your soul. When we share our gifts & talents and live a soul-filled life, we shine brightly. When we live this way, it can have a profound effect on everyone we come into contact with and it can change the world we live in.

Review of ‘Misadventures of a Garden State Yogi’


 “Oskar’s yoga class touched the right chord and made my soul sing.”

At the beginning of his book, that was how Brian Leaf described the first yoga class he took while in college at Georgetown. Many of us who practice yoga know exactly what Brian is describing.  It feels like ‘coming home’.

Throughout his book Brian writes brilliantly as he brings us along for the ride exploring different aspects of yoga, traveling the country, and returning back home again. His sense of humor and honesty contribute to a great read about someone exploring life and yoga (which to me are really one-in-the-same!).

You do not have to be a yoga student to read this book – it’s really about living life, exploring what contributes to personal growth, and what can bring us to our own state of happiness.

The book holds many wonderful stories from his ‘misadventures’ and also includes Brian’s Eight Keys to Happiness.  As a yoga teacher, yoga teacher trainer, life/health coach, someone who leads e-courses about Living Life and Making Choices, and someone who is constantly exploring what feeds our soul, I could really relate to Brian’s Eight Keys, which are:

  • Do Yoga.  And if you already do yoga, do more yoga. 
    Thank you for the reminder, Brian, at our yoga community in Concord, New Hampshire, we say – More Yoga GOOD!
  • Follow Your Heart
    Once we start to practice yoga, if we are not following our heart, we will be out of sync with our true nature and as that is revealed, we discover we can no longer do that which does not feed our soul.
  • Cultivate and follow your intuition
    We all have the capacity to do this well. Brian’s chapter ‘White Sands’ ends with suggestions about how to tap into your intuition.  One sentence sums it up: Feel for a sense of ‘rightness’.
  • Apply at least three pieces of Ayurvedic wisdom to your daily schedule.
    A great reminder for me to make an appointment with my friend, Nicole, an Ayurveda practitioner.
  • Meditate.! So, what are you waiting for?  Perhaps you’ll join me, my friend, Cary, and others for Deepak Chopra’s new 21-day Meditation Challenge: Creating Abundance.
  • Connect with your heart and interact with others from that place.
    This requires an awareness of the ego, detaching from outcomes, letting go, and being present.  The words may seem simple, but to do this well – and consistently – it takes practice.  This is yoga – off the mat.
  • Speak and act from your true self.
    Through the practice of yoga and self-awareness, we learn so much about ourselves and why we act and react the way we do.  When we explore our values, how we want to be with others, and what we bring to the world, we are being authentic.
  • Become most real.
    Misadventures of a Garden State Yogi is about Brian’s journey of discovering how to ‘become most real’.  If you follow the other seven keys to happiness, this final ‘key’ will fall into place since you cannot ‘be most real’ without following your heart, cultivating your intuition, connecting with others, and speaking and acting with integrity. Yoga (including Meditation, Pranayama/Breath and other techniques), and its sister science, Ayurveda, are tools to help us discover our true self and create the possibility to understand what makes us happy.

Train Your Brain To Be More Positive


According to Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, we can train our brain to be more positive by doing the following 5 things each day:

– 3 gratitude statements every day
(be grateful, put life in perspective)

– journal (process your feelings)

– exercise (move the body)

– Meditation (still the mind)

– Random Acts of Kindness (give to others)
